Remembrance Day

Wednesday, November 10th, 2021

Remembrance Day, originally called Armistice Day, continues to be observed on November 11 every year, in Canada and other countries, to honour and remember the men and women who served during times of war and peace.

Every year, since 1919, on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month, Canadians commemorate the armistice agreement that ended the First World War at 11:00 a.m. on November 11, 1919.

We pause in a moment of silence.

For those who leave never to return. For those who return but are never the same. We remember.

Two Minutes of Silence

Thursday, November 7th, 2019

Every year on November 11, Canadians pause in a moment of silence to honour and remember the men and women who have served, and continue to serve Canada during times of war, conflict and peace. We remember the more than 2,300,000 Canadians who have served throughout our nation’s history and the more than 118,000 who made the ultimate sacrifice.*

As we stand in silence, with the sounds of the Last Post ringing in our hearts, the iconic poem  — In Flanders Fields comes to mind. Lest we forget…

In Flanders Fields
Lieutenant-Colonel John McCrae

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie,
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

Our office will be closed on Monday, November 11, 2019 in observance of Remembrance Day.

Lest We Forget

Friday, November 9th, 2018

This Sunday, November 11th, 2018, is the 100th anniversary of Armistice Day, the end of World War I. Let us take a moment to honour and remember all those who have made the ultimate sacrifice on our behalf, those who fought and returned home from war — broken, and those who still serve today across the globe. Let us celebrate peace and strive for an end to all wars throughout the world.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old,
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.
From: For the Fallen, by Robert Laurence Binyon (1869-1943)
