Cheers to Fifty Years!

Friday, September 23rd, 2022

On Saturday, September 17th, Brunette Machinery said “Cheers to fifty years!” in celebration of Larry Walsh’s 50-year work anniversary!

A collage of photos for a 50th work anniversary

Larry Walsh, our superhero service technician, started work with Brunette Machine Works (now Brunette Machinery) as a machinist apprentice in 1972 when he was eighteen years old. Larry earned his machinist ticket, and moved into the fitting department. There he worked fitting and assembling metal parts for debarkers, bandmills, screens, chippers, the auto chip edger, and other equipment for sawmill and veneer plywood applications.

Later, when Brunette Machinery moved its head office to Surrey, Larry continued to work in the new shop but soon decided to retire. Well, he thought he decided to retire, but it didn’t take much to convince him to stay with the company as Brunette’s principal service technician.

Larry is known as our superhero service tech, not only for his expertise with every Brunette machine, but also for his willingness to go where he is needed and his knack for figuring out exactly what needs to be done. Those who have worked with Larry respect his knowledge and his strong work ethic. He is well known for his feisty personality and his no-nonsense approach to doing the job right.

To commemorate Larry’s outstanding milestone, Brunette held an anniversary party at the Hastings Racecourse in Vancouver. There was food, music and of course, cake! Team Brunette had a blast betting on the horses — and everyone had a bit of luck! At least there weren’t any tears or fist clenching after the last stretch!

Kirk, presented Larry with a Canucks jersey emblazoned with the number 50, a blue Brunette superhero cape — which he immediately put on — and a framed collage of “Larry” photos that we had all signed.

The rest of the afternoon was spent chatting and reminiscing about the “good old days” (when Larry had hair!)

It was a spectacular day. The weather was fantastic and the food was delicious. There was a lot of laughter and much excitement as we cheered on our favourites to win!

Thank you, Larry, for your fantastic work and contribution to Brunette! Congratulations on your amazing achievement! Cheers to fifty years!

There Goes Another Grizzly Mill Hog

Friday, January 14th, 2022

When one of our customers, a pulp and paper mill in the British Columbian interior, inquired about a simple, low maintenance, rugged wood waste grinder capable of producing quality product at a high-volume output, Brunette’s sales team recommended the Brunette/CBI Grizzly Mill Hog.

Known as the heavyweight champion of wood waste grinders, the Grizzly Mill Hog is designed to be the most rugged hog on the market. It will handle almost any material thrown at it and keep on running.

The Grizzly Mill features a solid steel, high-inertia, offset helix rotor with four rows of alternating spiral striker bars. The Hog is performance engineered to easily process large butt ends, stringybark, demolition material, typical urban waste as well as sawmill waste wood debris into a quality biomass fuel. The spiral rotor spreads material equally across the full width for maximum throughput while providing even wear on the anvil and grate.

The Grizzly Mill Hog’s robust construction makes extremely tolerant of metal and rocks. The anvil and grate are protected with shear pins and can swing away to eliminate any damage due to processing of rocks or large pieces of metal.

Superior ergonomic design makes the Grizzly Mill extremely safe, easy, and inexpensive to maintain. The heavy-duty frame is covered with replaceable, high wear resistant bolt-on liners. A clam shell opening, rotor lock and safety bar ensures safe access for easy maintenance. Other features of the Grizzly Mill Hog that were key to our customer’s requirements include:

  • Large infeed opening
  • Twenty-four striker bars, tungsten carbide
  • Solid steel bearing housing
  • Heavy-duty two-position rolled grate
  • Progressive rectangular hole pattern
  • Two shear pins c/w holders
  • Swing-away anvil, 6″ thick
  • Two hydraulic cylinders
  • Mechanical safety lock
  • Electrical safety interlocks, upper frame, anvil, grate, and rotor motion

The Brunette team collaborated with customer to ensure that the Grizzly Mill Hog would fulfil their needs.  Then the work of building the machine began. Drawings were approved, materials and parts were ordered up and the process of building the 44,600 lb. machine began.

During the last weeks of December, the Grizzly Mill was painted, assembled, and tested before it was wrapped up and shipped to our customer in the West Kootenay region of BC.

Another job well done!

The Spirit of Giving

Monday, January 3rd, 2022

What a year it’s been! We had all hoped for a “return to normal” in 2021, but instead we were still figuring out a “new normal”. But looking back, we have accomplished amazing things in this past year.

With the COVID-19 pandemic still raging, we all had to be flexible, understanding, and open to change. We perfected the art of online meetings. We managed to stay connected to each other in creative and fundamental ways. We didn’t give up and we managed, for the most part, to stay positive and take good care of ourselves and others in ways we never imagined.

We forged new paths and adjusted our lives/businesses to face the challenges and transitions that 2021 brought us. And we did a great job!

One thing that stayed the same, however, was our collective desire to help our most vulnerable citizens. It has been a high stress time for everyone, and food insecurity has increased during the pandemic. Many families and individuals who never anticipated using the food bank were faced with the harsh reality of empty cupboards.

Once again, in the spirit of giving, Brunette Machinery along with Murray Latta Progressive Machine, pitched in to help provide food for hungry families in our community. From November 15 to December 23, 2021, we filled eight boxes with non-perishable food items to be donated to the Surrey Food Bank.

Kudos to everyone at Brunette Machinery, and Murray Latta Progressive Machines for helping to make the holidays a bit brighter for those at risk in our community.
