Our Top Five Maintenance Tips To Help You Get More From Your Mill

Wednesday, November 1st, 2023

Every mill owner wants to maximize their equipment lifespan and prevent major machine crashes. They know unplanned downtime can mean heavy financial costs and lengthy production delays.

Your wood-processing machinery is a significant investment and the heart of your business. Keeping your equipment in optimum condition is fundamental to increasing your ROI and extending the life of your machines. Regular maintenance can identify potential safety problems, prevent costly breakdowns, optimize performance, and maintain product quality.

Below are our top five maintenance tips for Brunette Chippers, Grinders, BioSizers and other wood-processing machines to help you get more from your mill.

Our Top 5 Maintenance Tips

1. READ YOUR PARTS AND SERVICE MANUAL
We provide a manual that contains information about your specific machine, including safety instructions, installation and start-up instructions, maintenance & lubrication schedules, mechanical drawings, spare parts lists and more.

2. PROVIDE OPERATOR TRAINING
Ensure that operators and technicians understand the operation and safety procedures of every machine. Training should include knowledge of equipment limitations and the workings of all systems and controls. Trained operators and technicians are often the first to notice minor problems before they become major failures. Training programs also ensure that operators learn the proper usage of the machines, thereby minimizing the chance of unintentional damage.

3. PERFORM DAILY CHECKS
A daily checklist of maintenance tasks completed at the beginning or end of the workday can identify signs of wear or other minor problems that require attention. These tasks are in your Parts and Service manual. It’s a good practice to keep records of the dates/times of the completed tasks.

4. FOLLOW A LUBRICATION SCHEDULE
Proper lubrication is essential to peak machine function. Lubricant reduces friction between moving parts, protecting them from wear and tear. Monitoring and replacing your machines’ lubrication levels will significantly increase your equipment’s lifespan. Recommended lubrication schedules are found in your Parts & Service manual.

5. STOCK KEY PARTS
To increase your mill’s efficiency, Brunette recommends stocking an inventory of parts. A supply of critical spare parts can allow your team to quickly get your machine running and minimize downtime and service costs. We provide a list of spare parts you can purchase to have on hand to prevent untimely shutdowns.

Need a Custom Engineered Solution for Your Next Mill Project?

Thursday, October 19th, 2023

Brunette Machinery is renowned across North America for manufacturing and supplying forestry equipment such as the Brunette Drum Chipper. But did you know that we can provide custom engineered turn-key solutions based on your unique requirements?

Our Latest Project

Recently, Brunette Machinery designed, manufactured and installed a custom engineered biomass system consisting of a single 18-roll Disc Scalping Screen, a specialized infeed chute assembly, and two Brunette 4872B BioSizers®. The infeed chute, complete with a Diverter Gate, can convey material to both BioSizers operating simultaneously or one at a time.

Our innovative engineering and sales teams worked closely with our client to custom design an infeed chute with a diverter gate to handle the mill’s high volume, increase productivity and reduce maintenance costs. Our team devised this chute assembly to accommodate the customer’s budgetary restraints while fitting the new equipment into the original space.

During the engineering phase, we measured the current area to confirm conformance with the engineering drawings supplied by the customer. We considered the type and volume of the material to be processed and discussed the project goals. Our team collaborated throughout the process with the customer to develop the perfect solution.

The resulting design met all the customer’s production requirements. This custom-engineered system fits into the designated space. The customer’s conveyor system will feed the new Disc Scalping Screen that will furnish the screened material to the new infeed chute that feeds both BioSizers.
