Take Control of Your Chip Supply with a Brunette Chipper

Tuesday, April 1st, 2025

Brunette Machinery Company is a key manufacturer of wood-processing and material-handling systems for sawmills, plywood mills and pellet plants like yours. We help you take control of your chip supply.

Our products include the extreme-duty stationary Drum Chipper, the Grizzly Mill Hog — the heavy-weight champion of waste wood grinding; the Brunette BioSizer® — a high-speed secondary grinder; the Brunette E-Sweeps; the Brunette Reclaimer — rotary debarker; scalping screens; and the Brunette Flare Butt Reducer.

Brunette Drum Chippers lead the market in versatility and longevity. Our robust Chippers produce premium pulp mill chips, or first-rate microchips for use in the biofuel industry.

Our wood processing and material handling machinery can handle the toughest conditions and our Whole Log Drum Chipper is no exception.

The Whole Log Chipper, a horizontal-feed machine, processes logs up to 24″ in diameter. A powered upper pressroll and lower bedrolls control log feed to produce high-quality pulp chips or microchips consistent in thickness and size from tree-length material.

With a 40″ wide throat, the Whole Log Chipper easily processes various materials and produces high-quality chips suitable for the pulp and paper, biomass and pellet industries.

The Chipper’s inertia rotor is constructed from heavy-duty steel and uses less energy when processing high volumes. Two rotors are available for our Whole Log Chipper – the standard rotor, for up to 1¼” nominal pulp chip, and our unique MicroChip rotor designed to produce a ¼” nominal chip. Each rotor can be outfitted with our standard Brunette quick-change knife system or the Key Knife system.

The Whole Log Chipper features a hard-surfaced anvil with a break-away support frame for protection from foreign materials. The rear access platform and hood make knife maintenance easy and safe. The Chipper includes a common sub-frame which ties the infeed, chipper, motor, and HPU together for rigidity, and one lift installation.

Like all our Chippers, this Chipper is available in various sizes and configurations. When you purchase a Brunette machine, you can depend on a well-tested, heavy-duty product that will deliver a long service life with low maintenance costs.

We offer more than just equipment sales! Our focus is delivering exceptional customer service. We collaborate with you to furnish solutions designed to suit your needs. Take Control of Your Lumber Supply

Friday, November 15th, 2024

Do you have feeding problems inside and outside your mill? The Brunette Flare Butt Reducer can help you take control of your lumber supply by converting troublesome logs into valuable lumber while improving productivity across every machine center in your mill.

Installing a Brunette Flare Butt Reducer at the start of the production line affords many advantages throughout the entire mill. including improved log handling and sorting, better alignment and log control during scanning. As well, more accurate curve sawing occurs without influence from the butt flare and, negative effects from conveyor chain transitions during the sawing are minimized.

When the flare butt ends are removed, sand, pebbles, and other debris, often embedded in the butt end of logs, are removed which reduces wear on saws and chipping knives. Removing large flare butt ends improves log handling on transfer decks.

The Brunette Flare Butt Reducer features a rugged main frame, extreme-duty lifting arm assembly, heavy-duty hold-down arm with a large pivot shaft. The hold down arm log turner and bottom log turners have electric drives. Our Flare Butt Reducer has a replaceable cutterhead shaft mounted in a B-Lok. The cutterhead assembly has 42 four-sided solid steel knives with a protective cover, powered by an 1800 RPM direct drive. The FBR can handle a maximum 40″ diameter log with a 54″diameter butt. The Brunette Flare Butt Reducer is also equipped with a short-log support.

The Brunette Dual Head Flare Butt Reducer

Our custom-designed Brunette Flare Butt Reducer Dual Head (DH) model has all the same features and advantages as our original model, including proper positioning of logs, accurate scanning, reduced downtime, and increased recovery. Additionally, this unique model eliminates the need to orient the logs. The Dual Head Flare Butt Reducer has the same solid construction as our standard Flare Butt Reducer, but it is equipped with two cutterheads; each with a pivoting mount for 100 HP 1800 RPM electric motor, a set of 42 four-sided knives, a hydraulic cylinder, and a pivoting cutterhead cover.

With either model Brunette FBR, you will gain the following benefits:

LOG SORTING:

  • Transport and feeding of logs will be more reliable on all conveyors

LOG INTAKE AND DEBARKING

  • Less wear & tear on the debarker means fewer spare parts used and mreduced downtime
  • The debarker will handle bigger logs when the butt flare is removed
  • Higher quality pulp chips as less bark is left between the butt flares

SAWMILL IN GENERAL

  • Less transport problems — for logs, cants, and side pockets
  • Higher feed speeds can be maintained without the butt flares
  • Faster and easier turning of the logs

Brunette Flare Butt Reducers’ unique design and innovative cutting geometry increase recovery, while their robust construction reduces maintenance and improves uptime for continual return on investment.

Check out our complete line of diverse, innovative machines on our Equipment page or call 1.800.686.6679 to speak with one of our sales representatives.

Five Ways to Maximize the Lifespan of Your Mill Equipment.

Wednesday, October 2nd, 2024

Your wood-processing machinery is a significant investment and the heart of your business. Keeping your equipment in optimum condition is fundamental to increasing your ROI and extending the life of your machines. You know unplanned downtime can mean heavy financial costs and lengthy production delays. A regular maintenance schedule can help identify potential safety problems, prevent costly breakdowns, optimize performance, and maintain product quality.

Optimize Your Mill Equipment

Below are our top five ways to extend the lifespan of your Brunette Chippers, Grinders, BioSizers and other wood-processing machines to help you get more from your mill.

1. READ YOUR PARTS AND SERVICE MANUAL
We provide a manual that contains information about your specific machine, including safety instructions, installation and start-up instructions, maintenance & lubrication schedules, mechanical drawings, spare parts lists and more.

2. PERFORM DAILY CHECKS
A daily checklist of maintenance tasks completed at the beginning or end of the workday can identify signs of wear or other minor problems that require attention. These tasks are in your Parts and Service manual. It’s a good practice to keep records of the dates/times of the completed tasks.

3. FOLLOW A LUBRICATION SCHEDULE
Proper lubrication is essential for peak machine function. Lubricant reduces friction between moving parts, protecting them from wear and tear. Monitoring and replacing your machines’ lubrication levels will significantly increase your equipment’s lifespan. Recommended lubrication schedules are found in your Parts & Service manual.

4. PROVIDE OPERATOR TRAINING
Your operators and technicians must understand the operation and safety procedures of every machine in your mill. Training should include knowledge of equipment limitations and the workings of all systems and controls. Trained operators/technicians are often the first to notice minor problems before they become major failures. Training programs also ensure that operators learn the proper usage of the machines, thereby minimizing the chance of unintentional damage.

If you or your team have questions, our fully qualified service technicians can provide technical expertise. We can also provide on-site or remote training and instructional sessions if required.

5. STOCK KEY PARTS
To increase your mill’s efficiency, Brunette recommends stocking an inventory of parts. A supply of critical spare parts can allow your team to quickly get your machine running and minimize downtime and service costs. We provide a list of spare parts you can purchase to have on hand to prevent untimely shutdowns.
