Installing a Brunette Flare Butt Reducer at the start of the production line affords many advantages throughout the entire mill. including improved log handling and sorting, better alignment and log control during scanning. As well, more accurate curve sawing occurs without influence from the butt flare and, negative effects from conveyor chain transitions during the sawing are minimized.

When the flare butt ends are removed, sand, pebbles, and other debris, often embedded in the butt end of logs, are removed which reduces wear on saws and chipping knives. Removing large flare butt ends improves log handling on transfer decks.

The Brunette Flare Butt Reducer features a rugged main frame, extreme-duty lifting arm assembly, heavy-duty hold-down arm with a large pivot shaft. The hold down arm log turner and bottom log turners have electric drives. Our Flare Butt Reducer has a replaceable cutterhead shaft mounted in a B-Lok. The cutterhead assembly has 42 four-sided solid steel knives with a protective cover, powered by an 1800 RPM direct drive. The FBR can handle a maximum 40″ diameter log with a 54″diameter butt. The Brunette Flare Butt Reducer is also equipped with a short-log support.

The Brunette Dual Head Flare Butt Reducer

Our custom-designed Brunette Flare Butt Reducer Dual Head (DH) model has all the same features and advantages as our original model, including proper positioning of logs, accurate scanning, reduced downtime, and increased recovery. Additionally, this unique model eliminates the need to orient the logs. The Dual Head Flare Butt Reducer has the same solid construction as our standard Flare Butt Reducer, but it is equipped with two cutterheads; each with a pivoting mount for 100 HP 1800 RPM electric motor, a set of 42 four-sided knives, a hydraulic cylinder, and a pivoting cutterhead cover.
